I really like Matt Baier’s Organizing philosophy:
“Organizing should be about three things:
1. Taking the less important stuff out of the way, so that we can focus on the most important stuff.
2. Finding what we want, when we want it.
3. Living in the present and enjoying the moment.”
I particularly like what he says about photographs:
“When my team is organizing a home, the process often grinds to a halt when the photos are unearthed. The client is having a great time walking down memory lane when her old photos have been uncovered, but that seems to be the only time. Traditional albums are a good alternative, because they are more shareable, but they often get buried too, in closets and cabinets. ::: ::: Why hide them away? We recently made one room in our house the picture room and hung a ton of family and baby photos. We find ourselves going in there just to look at them.
Great post Arline.
I’m the same way with photos, and not just my own. I’ve always been drawn to them and the stories they remind us of and the stories they tell.
In the news footage we see of people who’s home’s have been destroyed in a hurricane, what do they always say? “We lost EVERYTHING, we lost our family photos…” All too often, the only disaster that buries our photos is indecision. Finding someone that knows how to share those moments, can be the “gift of a lifetime.” 😉
Matt, it’s true how important photos are. If we lose them, we lose many threads of our lives. We are very lucky today that there are many ways to preserve and share our photos, but still, many don’t do that because of indecision, as you said.
First I need to take more photos! But perserving the ones I have should be a priority.
I know some people just have the fun and don’t think to take photos, too, but I hope you preserve all photos of your family in years gone by. Something they all can share…
ALWAYS organize and preserve those photos! I’ve seen too many people lose theirs and wish they had some other way to remember them.
Completely agree, Brian. We take pictures to remember wonderful moments in our lives and the photos and memories are priceless.
